Smashwords Publishing

Smashwords is leading the way to publish ebooks, and it is the way I chose to get my stories onto the internet so others could enjoy them as much as I do.

Mark Coker has created a presentation on Introducing Smashwords and even if you are not ready to put your own novels up on Smashwords yet it is well worth taking the time to watch, and if you need to, click the links for further information on getting published the Indie way.

I’m having a lot of trouble with Smashwords. When i upload a Word file, Smashwords’s converter changes the layout of the pages, causing big blanks and things to appear on wrong pages. My eBook is not a novel and includes a lot of pictures, and I am good with Word. But for some reason, I keep getting all these errors, and having to wait hours to get through the queue to find out that one thing is off is extremely frustrating. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! For instance, should I be setting Word’s margins to a certain size?

I publish text only, but I have a few suggestions. If you are already doing each step then ignore my suggestions.

1] If you use Word 2003 or later, make sure you compress each image. Right click each image, select format picture, select picture tab, and select “compress” in lower left hand corner. If you don’t have Word 2003 or later, you can compress each image using Photoshop Elements, or Photoshop, or another editing program and “Save for Web” each image. You want to keep each image width less than 500 pixels. You might need to reduce your file size.

2] Remove all text boxes and all multiple consecutive paragraph returns.

3] Read step 13 in the Smashwords Style Guide and follow the instructions.

4] If all else fails, pay someone to arrange the layout of your non fiction book.
